On Thursday, August 15, 2024, the TCESC Occupational and Physical Therapy (OT/PT) Department hosted its annual ‘Emergency Evacuation Training’ at the TCESC facility in Niles. The event brought together 70 community bus drivers and supervisors, all focused on enhancing their skills and knowledge to ensure the safety of students with special needs during emergencies.
The training began with a detailed session on the importance of Individual Transportation Plans (ITP) tailored to the unique abilities and needs of each student. Drivers were educated on various lift techniques critical for evacuating students safely during emergency situations. To reinforce proper lifting and body mechanics, therapists provided live demonstrations.
The second part of the training was hands-on, giving drivers the opportunity to apply what they learned by practicing these techniques with young volunteers on the bus. Under the close supervision of the OT/PT staff, drivers demonstrated their understanding of safety protocols and efficiency, ensuring they are well-prepared to handle any emergency scenario.
This annual training is a crucial part of TCESC's commitment to student safety, particularly for those with special needs who rely on community transportation services.
