Soar To Structured Literacy

Dyslexia Cohort 1

Our first group of Trumbull County educators consisting of K-3 teachers, administrators, special Ed directors, paraprofessionals, and tutors has officially soared its way into new ways of teaching structured literacy. The ESC held its final training session Thursday at the Grand Resort in Howland. We've been working with the AIM Institute for Learning & Research to train all K-3 teachers for the rollout of the state-required literacy professional development as stated in HB 436: Ohio's Dyslexia Support Laws. Teachers tell us they're already seeing improvements in students after implementing concepts from these pieces of training into their classroom lessons.

"My teachers are lucky enough to already have an understanding of how students process information, but this training is causing more light bulbs to go off on what we can continue to improve, which will only enhance classroom outcomes for our students," said

Tricia Lockso - Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Hubbard Exempted Schools. "

We appreciate the partnership with the ESC and the time and energy they have invested in ensuring everyone in the county is getting this training. One of our biggest concerns was trying to determine how to get all of our staff trained and at the same level, and this has been a wonderful experience to get everyone on the same page and moving forward together."

Sarah Arquilla, a Kindergarten Teacher at LaBrae Local Schools, said this training has far surpassed anything she was taught in college.

"I've been teaching for 11 years, so it's a whole new way of teaching; it reordered the way we present our curriculum, so we are doing things in a more fluid process, so it makes sense to students, and we're already seeing progress in students. If we know better, we can do better, so this has all been very interesting. We are now teaching the content in a way that makes more sense to the way students learn, so it's all making more sense to them," said Arquilla.

Aim Institute for Learning & Research and the TCESC will be back together in January as we kick off Cohort 2, ensuring all of our required educators are prepared for the rollout of HB 436: Ohio's Dyslexia Support Laws.
